Gemini for Free: What It Includes, Its Limits and When It’s Worth Paying

Gemini can be used free of charge with a Google account, but with usage limits and reduced models. Here is what the free version includes, when it runs out and when it makes sense to move to a Google AI plan.

Yes, Gemini is free: all you need is a Google account to use it on the web or in the app, with no credit card.
From 9 October 2026, however, the free version gives access only to the Flash-Lite model: Flash and Pro, the more capable models, are reserved for Google AI subscriptions, which start at 4.99 euros a month. In addition, free use has limits that are counted not in messages but in compute resources consumed.

For anyone running a company, the real question is not whether Gemini is free, but whether the free version is enough for the work required, and with what data it can be used. This guide answers both. If you would first like an overview of what Gemini is and how it works, start with our main guide.

What Gemini includes without a subscription

To use Gemini for free you need a personal Google account. You can access it from gemini.google.com or from the app for Android and iOS; on many Android smartphones Gemini is already built in as the assistant.

At the time of writing, Google’s subscriptions page sets out what is included in all plans, including the free one:

  • chat with Gemini, with web search and file and image uploads;
  • image generation;
  • Deep Research, the feature that carries out in-depth research across multiple sources and returns a report;
  • Gemini Live, voice conversation;
  • Canvas, the space for writing and editing documents and code together with the AI;
  • Gemini Notebook.

The free plan also includes the Google account’s 15 GB of free storage. There are therefore many features, but each one draws on the same usage quota: the heavier ones, such as Deep Research or the analysis of long files, use it up more quickly.

A practical warning: there are sites online promising “free Gemini without registration” or unlimited access to Google’s models. They are not Google services but intermediaries: conversations pass through their servers, under data retention rules you do not control. The only official free access is through your own Google account.

What changes from 9 October 2026

From 9 October 2026 Google has chosen to change the models available on each plan. According to the help page “Changes to Gemini model access and limits”, users without a subscription will only be able to use Flash-Lite, the lightest model in the family. Until that date the free version also gave access to Flash and, with variable limits, to Pro.

The same page introduces two further changes:

  • effort levels (low, medium, high), which let you choose how much reasoning to devote to a request: a higher level gives more accurate answers on complex tasks, but uses more quota;
  • Deep Think, the most advanced reasoning mode, reserved for AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers.

In practice, the free version remains suitable for questions, summaries, drafts and quick searches, whereas long reasoning, complex analysis or code require at least a paid plan.

Anyone searching for “Gemini Pro free” currently has only one official route: dedicated promotions, such as the Gemini for university students offer. For everyone else, Pro requires a Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription.

How the free version’s limits work

The limits of free Gemini are the point that causes the most confusion, because they do not correspond to a fixed number of questions. Many articles online still report outdated rules, such as the “five prompts a day” of 2025.

A usage-based quota

Since 17 May 2026 Google has measured Gemini usage on the basis of compute consumed. According to the help page on limits, consumption depends on three factors: the complexity of the prompt, the features used and the length of the chat. The quota resets every 5 hours, up to a weekly cap.

As a result, two people sending the same number of messages can use up their quota at very different rates. A series of short questions weighs little; a Deep Research, the analysis of a long PDF or a conversation that has been going on for hours weigh much more. With the new effort levels, choosing the high level speeds up consumption even further.

The context window: 32,000 tokens

The context window is the amount of text Gemini can keep in mind within a single conversation, including uploaded documents. In the free version it is 32,000 tokens; it rises to 128,000 tokens with AI Plus and to 1 million with AI Pro and AI Ultra, according to the same Google help page.

On average, a token corresponds to part of a word. In practice, 32,000 tokens are enough for a conversation of normal length or a short document, not for analysing a substantial contract, a set of financial statements or a series of reports. When the conversation exceeds the window, Gemini loses track of the earlier parts and its answers become less consistent with what was said before.

What happens when the quota runs out

Once the 5-hour or weekly limit is reached, there are two options: wait for the reset or move to a plan with higher limits. Until October, free Gemini users could carry on with Flash-Lite; from 9 October Flash-Lite is the only model in the free version, so once the quota is used up the only option is to wait for the reset.

When it makes sense to switch to a subscription

Based on how often the limit stops your work, and what you do with Gemini, you can assess whether or not to move to a subscription.

  • The free version is enough if you use Gemini a few times a day for questions, summaries of short texts, email drafts and quick searches.
  • AI Plus makes sense if you hit the limit every week, if you need Flash rather than Flash-Lite or if you work on documents that exceed the 32,000-token window. It is also the entry plan for video generation.
  • AI Pro is worth it if you need the Pro model and Deep Think reasoning, if you analyse very long documents thanks to the 1 million token window, or if you want Gemini inside Gmail and Docs, which Google’s subscriptions page lists among the plan’s features.
  • AI Ultra is designed for those who use Gemini intensively all day and need the highest limits and experimental features.

A practical way to decide: use the free version for two weeks on real tasks and note how often the quota or the quality of the answers slowed you down. If it happens more than once a week, the time lost is already worth more than the 4.99 euros for AI Plus.

Can Gemini be used free of charge for work?

Technically yes, but with one significant limitation: data. The Gemini Apps privacy notice explains that a subset of chats is reviewed by human reviewers to improve Google services, and advises against entering confidential information you would not want a reviewer to see. Turning off the “Keep Activity” setting means chats are not used to improve the models, but they are still retained for up to 72 hours.

The same notice specifies that different data processing terms may apply to a work or school Google account. This is the difference that matters: a personal account, free or paid, is not the right tool for contracts, client data, financial information or corporate strategy. Solutions designed for businesses are another matter, and you will find them explained in our guide on how to adopt Gemini in your company.

Free Gemini is an excellent way to understand what Google’s artificial intelligence can do, provided it is used with non-confidential data.
Once it becomes an everyday work tool, the choice is no longer between free and Plus, but between a personal account and a business solution.

Domande frequenti

Is Gemini really free?

Yes. Gemini can be used without a subscription with a standard Google account and without entering a credit card. The free version includes chat, web search, file and image uploads, image generation, Gemini Live and other features, but applies lower limits than the paid Google AI plans.

What are the limits of free Gemini?

The limits do not correspond to a fixed number of messages: they depend on the amount of computing resources used, the complexity of the requests, the features enabled and the length of the conversation. The free version also has a smaller context window than the paid plans and, from 9 October 2026, uses only the Flash-Lite model.

When is it worth moving from free Gemini to a paid plan?

A subscription is worth considering when limits frequently interrupt your work, when you need more capable models such as Flash or Pro, or when you have to analyse much longer documents and conversations. AI Plus is the first paid tier, while AI Pro is designed for more complex tasks and for anyone who needs the Pro model and a larger context window.
