There is a scene that plays out often in boardrooms (or on Zoom calls).
The month’s revenue is slightly below expectations. Anxiety rises. Management’s immediate reaction is almost Pavlovian: “We need to push. Let’s increase the Meta budget. Let’s run a flash sale. Let’s send a newsletter.”
You press the button, the charts spike for 48 hours, the anxiety subsides. Then, inevitably, the numbers crash again. And the cycle starts over.
This behaviour is not a business strategy. It is an addiction.
In digital marketing, many companies confuse the tools (Facebook Ads, Google Ads, Reels, SEO) with the strategy. It is like confusing the hammer with the architect’s plan.
In this article we will examine the crucial difference between Strategy and Tactics, and explain why an obsession with Performance Marketing (the immediate result) risks turning your brand into a commodity with no future.

Contact us1. The Dopamine Loop: Why We Love Tactics
Why do we prefer to launch an Ads campaign rather than work on brand positioning? It comes down to neurochemistry: Instant Gratification.
Advertising platforms are designed to give us immediate feedback. You spend €100, you see how many people clicked. This triggers a release of Dopamine in the entrepreneur’s brain. It is fast, measurable, exciting.
Building a Brand, by contrast, is slow, quiet and deep work. The results do not show in a day, but over years. It requires the patience of Serotonin: the molecule of long-term stability and security.
The danger is obvious: companies become “tactic-dependent”. They focus only on picking the low-hanging fruit (immediate sales) and forget to water the tree (brand perception). But when the tree stops bearing fruit, or when advertising costs rise (as they do every year), nothing is left.
2. Sun Tzu and Digital Noise
More than 2,000 years ago, in The Art of War, Sun Tzu wrote a line that every Marketing Manager should have tattooed: “Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat.”
Today, the web is full of “Noise before defeat”.
We see companies publishing 5 Reels a week (Tactics) without knowing what message they want to convey (Strategy). We see e-commerce businesses spending thousands of euros on Google Ads to drive traffic to a site that does not convert because it does not inspire trust.
- Strategy is the “Why” and the “What”: It defines who you are, who you are fighting against, what your Archetype is and why a customer should choose you. It is the map.
- Tactics are the “How” and the “Where”: They are the tools (Video, Blog, Ads) you use to move across the map.
Using Google Ads without a solid Brand Strategy is like buying a Ferrari without a driving licence: you will crash into a wall very quickly.
3. Renting vs Owning: The Concept of Brand Equity
There is an economic reason to stop relying solely on Paid Advertising: the rent is going up.
When you build your business on Ads alone, you are renting the attention of your audience from Zuckerberg or Google. The moment you stop paying (or the algorithm changes, or CPM rises), you become invisible. Your business switches off like a light bulb.
Working on Brand Identity and organic content, on the other hand, means building an asset you own.
It means occupying a space in the consumer’s mind (Mindshare) that no one can take away from you. A strong brand sells even when the Ads are switched off, because the customer is looking for you, not the generic product.
This is the only way to lower customer acquisition costs in the long run.
4. The Bliss Hybrid Approach: Balancing Push and Pull
Does this mean we should stop advertising? Absolutely not.
At Bliss, we believe in balance. Ads are the accelerator; the Brand is the engine.
Our methodology runs at two parallel speeds:
- Activation (Short Term): We use Performance Marketing tactics to generate cash and validate the market today.
- Building (Long Term): We use part of that budget to nurture the brand narrative, create guides, educate the customer and build authority for tomorrow.
If you invest 100% in tactics, you will live through peaks and crashes. If you invest 100% in pure strategy, you risk running out of cash before you see results.
The magic happens in between.
Branding and Performance: the Charles Philip Milano and Profumum case studies
Advertising campaigns without a solid brand are costs, not investments. In the Charles Philip Milano and Profumum Roma case studies, we demonstrated how strong positioning and branding work makes Ads activity far more effective, lowering acquisition costs thanks to an already established brand desirability.
Conclusions: Get Off the Hamster Wheel
If you are tired of having to “come up with something” every month to hit budget, you are probably trapped in a purely tactical cycle. You are running on a hamster wheel: plenty of movement, no real progress.
Stop. Look up from the daily campaign data.
Ask yourself: “If Facebook shut down tomorrow, would my brand still exist in my customers’ minds?”
If the answer is no, it is time to stop spending and start investing. It is time to define a strategy.
