Five words.
That is all a Webby Awards winner takes to the stage.
Just five words to leave one final trace inside the fastest, most crowded and changeable place of our age: the Internet.
Prince chose: «Everything you think is true». Stephen Colbert repeated the same word five times: «Me». Vint Cerf, one of the fathers of the Internet, said: «You ain’t seen nothin’ yet».
The Five-Word Speech rule already contains the identity of this highly prestigious award. Synthesis, immediacy, personality and the ability to become memorable before the feed presents something new.
Since 1997, The Webby Awards has recognized the best digital experiences. The twenty-ninth edition received almost 13,000 entries from more than 70 countries. In 2026 the award celebrated its thirtieth anniversary.
Among international digital awards and marketing awards, the Webby occupies a particular position. It observes creativity in the place where technology, culture and behavior transform most quickly. Each edition becomes a snapshot of the contemporary Internet.
In this article from the Gold Brief series we will analyze how the Webby Awards work, the categories, the voting system, the evaluation criteria and the path to building a competitive entry.
Gold Brief is the category of the Bliss blog dedicated to those who want to understand how recognition in marketing really works. In this series you will find operational guides to the international awards that matter (creativity, strategy, performance, design, SEO, innovation and much more) with everything you need to enter. Because the perfect brief is not written in one day: if anything, it is built every day.
Five Words to Stay in the Feed
The Five-Word Speech has become one of the most recognizable rituals in the awards world.
Each winner condenses the meaning of their project or their personality into five words. The speech is then shared through the ceremony, the gallery and the award’s social channels. Brevity creates a form of creative pressure. A long sentence allows you to explain. Five words force you to choose.
The winner can thank the team, launch a message, produce humour or leave a sentence capable of continuing to circulate after the award ceremony. The speech becomes a second entry, built when the award has already been assigned.
In 2026 Pete Davidson accepted his Special Achievement Award with «Thanks! I’m still dead inside». Dr. Fei-Fei Li had used the same space to state that artificial intelligence must serve humanity.
Two different speeches. Both highly recognizable.
The Award That Grew Up Alongside the Internet
The Webby Awards was born when the Internet was still very different from today.
Over thirty years it has followed the arrival of search engines, social networks, streaming, apps, podcasts, the creator economy and generative artificial intelligence. The structure of the award expanded every time a new digital language began to change the way people communicate, buy, work and build culture.
This ability to evolve represents one of the elements that determine the value of the Webby. In 2000 it awarded Google when the search engine was still defining its role. In the following years it recognized companies and projects that would change the way we live on the Internet, from Apple and Amazon to streaming platforms and new AI systems.
As analyzed in the article on the value of award archives over time, permanent presence in an authoritative gallery continues to produce recognition and semantic associations long after the ceremony. The Webby Gallery preserves winners, nominees, honorees and credits from 1997.
The Eight Areas of the Webby Awards
The 2026 edition accepts eight main types of entry. Among international digital awards, the Webby is the one with the broadest category map and the one most up to date with the contemporary digital ecosystem.
| Area | Types of Project |
| Websites & Mobile Sites | Corporate websites, landing pages, portals, mobile experiences |
| Social | Social campaigns, communities, branded accounts, activism |
| Video | Series, films, branded content, documentaries, short-form video |
| Podcasts & Digital Audio | Podcasts, audio branding, original audio content |
| Advertising, Media & PR | Digital campaigns, media planning, online public relations |
| Apps, Software & Voice | Mobile applications, B2B software, voice interfaces |
| Games & XR | Video games, virtual reality, augmented reality, immersive experiences |
| AI, Immersive & Creators | AI agents, generative experiences, creator economy, emerging formats |
The structure tries to contain the entire digital ecosystem: from a brand homepage to an AI agent, from B2B software to a virtual-reality experience.
The number of categories offers many entry possibilities and also increases the risk of choosing the wrong territory. The chosen category must make the project’s strength immediately legible.
AI and the Creator Economy Become Standalone Categories
The 2026 edition will give particular importance to artificial intelligence and the creator economy.
The AI area includes categories dedicated to applications, experiences, agents, real-time engagement, healthcare and technical achievement. The Creators area looks at formats, livestreams, podcasts, product launches and campaigns developed by multiple creators.
The separation of the two areas tells an important story: AI and creators have officially become autonomous business models and cultural environments.
To compete in categories dedicated to artificial intelligence, the project must show what function the technology performed. The jury observes whether AI improves creativity or the experience, solves a real problem and is applied with integrity. The novelty of the tool retains value only when it produces a functional consequence.
The issue connects directly to what we had written about artificial intelligence and marketing awards. Juries are raising the level of the question: they are less and less interested in knowing that a project uses AI. They want to understand why it needed it.
In the Creator categories, the strength of the project lies in the relationship between identity, audience and platform. A creator has a language and an implicit pact with their community. The campaign must respect this system and build around it a credible reason for the brand to enter. A recognizable voice builds belonging.
Two Winners for Every Category
At the Webby Awards there are two paths to obtaining the highest recognition.
| Recognition | How It Is Awarded | Recommended Strategy |
| Webby Winner | Chosen by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS) | Solid entry, precise case study, project quality |
| People’s Voice Winner | Elected through public online voting open to anyone | Community mobilization, active communication during voting |
The two winners may coincide or represent different projects.
Being nominated opens a specific communication phase. The public, clients, employees and partners can be involved in the vote. The nomination becomes a campaign within the campaign. The ability to mobilize one’s ecosystem acquires concrete value. In every digital contest and advertising award with public voting, this is the phase in which the agency’s community is worth as much as the quality of the work.
In how to communicate an award, we saw how the People’s Voice voting phase is a communication window with its own rules that must be managed methodically, not left to spontaneous initiative.
How the Selection Works
| Level | Description | Value |
| Official Honoree | A small percentage of entries recognized as excellent. Enters the official Webby Gallery. | Presence in the permanent archive |
| Nominee | The five finalists per category. They enter public voting for the People’s Voice. | Public visibility and voting |
| Webby Winner / People’s Voice | The highest recognition. One winner per category, through the Academy or the public. | Official recognition + archive |
The evaluation process develops in two stages. In the first round, the Associate Members of the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS), the organization founded in 1998 that brings together digital professionals globally, analyze entries according to the specific criteria of each area. Each project is observed by multiple members and the entries with the highest scores move to the next stage.
The Academy’s Executive Members then select five nominees per category and determine the Webby Winner. KPMG provides independent advice on the voting process.
Even a nomination has strategic value. The project enters the archive, gains access to public voting and is used in the communication of the agency or brand. The final award amplifies the result. The selection has already produced external proof of quality.
What the Jury Looks At
The criteria change according to the type of project, but the common principle concerns appropriateness.
The technology must work for the intended audience. The design must support the message. The brand must belong to the idea. The interaction must offer something the content would have lost in a passive form.
A campaign with an excellent insight loses strength when transferred to a platform without understanding its language. A visually sophisticated digital experience is weak when navigation and features slow the user down.
At the Webby Awards, the medium takes part in the evaluation.
How to Build a Webby Awards Entry
The competition is open to organizations and professionals involved in the design, production, management or promotion of digital work.
For the 2026 edition, the project had to have been available to the public for a period between October 2024 and February 2026. The materials had to remain accessible during the evaluation.
The entry changes depending on the category. A website is presented through the link to the experience. A film must allow the jury to observe the content directly. An integrated campaign or a technology project requires a case study capable of reconstructing how it works and its impact.
For works in Italian, the rules recommend an English version or an explanation in English inside the brief and case study. Videos and films must be dubbed or subtitled. Translation performs a strategic function. It must be editorial, not literal, because it preserves the meaning.
As explored in the Gold Brief guide on how to build a video case study, the story must make visible the relationship between problem, insight, solution and impact.
At the Webby Awards there is one additional difficulty, however. The case study must explain the project and at the same time leave room for the real experience. The jury must see the work, use it, listen to it or move through it.
Internet rewards participation. The entry should do the same.
Webby Awards Costs
Fees change according to the type of project and the bracket of the entering organization.
| Bracket | Type | Notes |
| Reduced | Nonprofits, academics, students, independent creators | Reduced fee. Check requirements on the official portal. |
| Standard | Agencies, brands, production companies | Main fee. Varies by area and submission window. |
| Premier | Premium entries with additional visibility | Check updated costs on webbyawards.com. |
The final deadline for the 2026 edition was February 6. The costs reported refer to the final entry window. Earlier windows offer reduced fees. As anticipated in the article on the ROI of an award strategy, the fee is the most visible part of the investment. The real cost includes case study production, translation, assets, credit coordination and any voting campaign for the People’s Voice.

The 2026 edition followed this calendar.

What the 2026 Winners Tell Us
The thirtieth edition rewarded projects from very different territories.
Among the special recognitions are Claude as Webby Person of the Year, Shonda Rhimes as Streaming Person of the Year and Kylie Kelce for Podcast of the Year. PBS was named Media Company of the Year thanks to the results achieved across the different categories.
In marketing, «Hot Ones Live presented by Stella Artois» won in the Best Community Engagement category. The project «Filet O Fish Facebook Society» won the Webby dedicated to community within advertising campaigns.
The Webby looks for the best of the Internet. It must continuously redefine what belongs to the Internet. In 1997 the answer could coincide with a website. In 2026 it includes AI agents, creator businesses, streaming, short-form video, digital communities, software and immersive worlds.
The Positioning Built by a Webby
Winning a Webby means entering international digital excellence.
For an agency, the award certifies expertise across different areas of digital communication. For a brand, it demonstrates the ability to participate in digital culture through a project evaluated by professionals and, in the case of the People’s Voice, chosen by the public.
The value increases when the recognition is connected to the specialization of the agency or brand. As always, among the most prestigious international awards, the weight of an award depends on the consistency between the recognition and the positioning one wants to build.
And so, this kind of award matters because recognition reduces the client’s uncertainty in the decision-making process. The name of the award generates attention. The category explains why that attention is deserved.
The Lesson of the Webby Awards
The Internet has built a world in which everything can be published and the Webby looks for what deserves to be remembered.
It observes design, technology. It follows the evolution of platforms and changes its categories when new ways of creating, communicating and producing value emerge. Then it asks the winner to reduce everything to five words.
Every digital project competes for the public’s time, attention and memory. A website has a few seconds to orient the user. A video must win the first frame. A creator must make their voice recognizable. An AI product must quickly clarify what problem it can solve.
The meaning must emerge immediately.
The Webby has rewarded the best of the Internet for thirty years and continues to remind the industry that everything can change in an instant. What remains must know how to tell its own story.
At most, in five words.
Domande frequenti
Why do winners’ speeches last five words?
The Five-Word Speech is the ceremony’s historic ritual. Each winner must condense thanks, message or personality into five words, creating content designed to be immediately shareable. Brevity is not a technical limitation. It is the rule that forces you to choose what really matters.
Can an Italian agency enter the Webby Awards?
Yes. The award accepts international entries from more than 70 countries. Works in Italian must be accompanied by translations, subtitles or explanations in English, depending on the type of entry. Translation performs a strategic function: it must preserve the meaning of the project, not merely make it understandable.
Which project has the best chance of winning?
A project capable of using digital as part of the idea, offering an experience consistent with its audience and demonstrating quality in content, execution and technology. The chosen category must make the strength of the entry immediately legible. The jury evaluates appropriateness even before excellence: the medium must belong to the idea.
