Is an Award-Winning Campaign Really an Effective Campaign?

In 2026, the world’s most awarded campaign for creativity and the most awarded for effectiveness are not the same.

In first place in the WARC Creative 100 is AXA’s Three Words, a project that turned a request into a legal contract. The WARC Effective 100, by contrast, is led by Dove’s Real Beauty, a platform built over more than twenty years of research, activity and communication.

The two rankings do not contradict each other: they measure two different dimensions. In this new issue of the Gold Brief column, we will analyse the gap between creative awards and digital effectiveness awards.

Gold Brief is the category of the Bliss blog for those who want to understand how recognition in marketing really works. In this column you will find practical guides to the international awards that matter (creativity, strategy, performance, design, SEO, innovation and much more), with everything you need to enter. Because the perfect brief is not written in a day: if anything, it is built every day.

Creativity and Effectiveness Measure Two Forms of Success

A creative award assesses the quality of the solution. It looks at the strength of the idea, the originality of the insight, the quality of the execution and the use of media. As analysed in the guide to the Cannes Lions, the jury bases its judgement on qualitative parameters.

An effectiveness award, by contrast, starts from the problem. What was the objective? What needed to change? Which part of the change can be attributed to the campaign? The Effie Awards and the AME Awards base their judgement on this logic.

Appearing in one ranking and not the other does not prove ineffectiveness. It shows that this dimension was not measured or entered.

The Award Can Arrive Before the Result

Campaigns are often entered into festivals just a few months after launch. By that point, data on views, press coverage and interactions is already available.

And yet the deeper effects take longer. Market share, penetration, preference, loyalty, brand equity: these results emerge over months or years, not weeks.

This gap is built into the Creative Effectiveness Lions at Cannes. The category is open to work that has been awarded or shortlisted in the previous three years. The creative award recognises the potential of the solution. The effectiveness award verifies that this potential has been realised.

The Metrics That Look Like Results

The most common difficulty lies in confusing what was distributed with what was achieved.

A hundred million impressions demonstrate exposure, not reception. Thousands of interactions show a response to the content, not an increase in purchase intent. Commercial growth during the campaign requires isolating the specific contribution of communication from that of price, distribution and seasonality.

To assess a campaign in digital awards and international digital contests, three levels must therefore be distinguished.

LevelWhat it measuresExample
OutputWhat was produced and distributedContent, events, media coverage, impressions
OutcomeThe response generated in the audienceAttention, recall, consideration, interaction
ImpactThe commercial or brand changeIncremental sales, market share, loyalty

A metric gains value when it is consistent with the objective. Engagement may be relevant to a project created to activate a community. It is not relevant to one designed to increase sales.

Effectiveness Is Decided Before Creativity

Measurement should be built into the strategy.

Before launch, you need a precise problem, a baseline and an observation period. ‘Increasing brand awareness’ must be translated into a segment, a tool and a timeframe. An awards strategy begins when the campaign objectives are defined.

The Creative Effectiveness Ladder by WARC and Cannes distinguishes six levels of progressive impact. The key point: not all results carry the same weight. A first-level result does not prove a lasting competitive advantage. Cannes Lions developed the Creative Effectiveness Ladder to distinguish six progressive levels of impact, from campaign benchmarks to long-term shareholder value. The ladder makes one point clear: not all results carry the same weight. A first-level result does not prove that a campaign has built a lasting competitive advantage.

Creativity Produces Economic Value

Separating creativity and effectiveness helps to measure each more accurately, but it is important that the two are not set against each other.

Kantar attributes a direct contribution to sales to creativity: campaigns with high creative quality generate a greater return for the same investment. As discussed in the article on the ROI of an awards strategy, the value of recognition is measured across several dimensions and over different time horizons.

When a Campaign Deserves Both Awards

The WARC Creative 100 and the Effective 100 present different rankings, but some work manages to appear in both.

In 2026, Xbox’s The Everyday Tactician ranks seventh in the creative ranking and sixth in the effectiveness ranking. The project’s value does not derive solely from the originality of the idea; it stems from the continuity between insight, execution and measurement.

Creativity and effectiveness stop being two separate categories when a campaign builds a distinctive idea, reaches the right audience and documents the link to the change it produced.

Winning Is Not Enough

An award strengthens reputation, supports a pitch and increases bargaining power.

The trophy is no substitute for proof of effectiveness. The more useful question is not whether the campaign won an award, but whether it produced the change that had been set as its objective.

The WARC Creative 100 rewards a campaign that turned three words into legal protection. The Effective 100 rewards a platform built over twenty years of commitment to a real problem.

Two different forms of excellence. But the highest point is reached when a campaign manages to earn both.

New Connections (FAQ)

What is the difference between a creative award and an effectiveness award?

A creative award primarily assesses the idea, innovation and execution. An effectiveness award requires business results to be documented, measurable and attributable to the campaign. The two dimensions can coexist, but they are measured with different methodologies and at different points in a campaign’s life cycle.

How do you measure the effectiveness of an advertising campaign?

A baseline must be set before launch, indicators consistent with the objective established, and a distinction drawn between what the campaign produced (output), the response it generated (outcome) and the commercial change (impact). The most significant results require months or years of observation.

How do you design a campaign capable of winning both creative and effectiveness awards?

The work must start from a measurable business problem and translate it into a distinctive idea. Baseline, audience, KPIs and attribution method must be defined before launch; during the campaign, the evidence linking strategy, execution and results must be gathered. In this way, measurement is not merely reconstructed at the moment of entry. Bliss integrates these elements into its awards strategy, assessing from the earliest stages the strength of the insight, the relevance of the categories and the quality of the available evidence. The aim is to build campaigns that create value for the audience and for the business before they ever become a competitive case study.
